[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]CARAA is an analytical research unit which applies the most suitable and modern physico-chemical techniques existing for cultural heritage and art market in order to answer questions related to the conservation, restoration, dating, characterization or authentication of art objects.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The<\/span> main lines of research <\/span>developed<\/span> at CARAA<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– Material characterization<\/a><\/strong> and degradation phenomena study.
\n– Works of art authentication<\/a><\/strong> and their<\/span> consistency<\/span> with the material and resources available<\/span> to the presumed date<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
\n– Direct dating<\/a><\/strong> using different techniques according to the analyzed material : thermoluminescence, 14C, ESR, U\/Th, dendrochronology.<\/p>\n

CARAA works with a network of institutional laboratories and in agreement with various academic institutions in order to respond accurately to each issue.<\/p>\n

All studies are subject to a detailed and reviewed report, including the operating conditions, the results and their interpretation.[\/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”History”][vc_column_text]CARAA was created in 2010 by Michel Bouchard, a chemist by training that holds a PhD in archaeometry and spectroscopy from the National Museum of Natural History<\/strong> in Paris. After obtaining his PhD in 2001, Michel Bouchard was a research engineer at the CNRS<\/strong> until 2005, working in particular on the study of metal oxides (Lille) or the degradation of varnishes by UV light (Paris).<\/p>\n

In 2006, he joined the Getty Conservation Institute<\/strong> in Los Angeles as a Conservation scientist, working on the collections and museum acquisitions. In 2009, Michel Bouchard left the Getty Museum to create CARAA, an analytical laboratory dedicated to curators, conservators and professionals from the art market; in 2012, he has been nominated as Expert before the Court of Appeal of Paris; in 2015 he has been appointed assessor to the Commission of Conciliation and Customs Expertise (CCED).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Research projects undertaken to date by Michel Bouchard involve most of the materials present in art and archeology.<\/p>\n
