What is CARAA ?

CARAA is an analytical research unit which applies the most suitable and modern physico-chemical techniques existing for cultural heritage and art market in order to answer questions related to the conservation, restoration, dating, characterization or authentication of art objects.

The main lines of research developed at CARAA are :

• Material characterization and degradation phenomena study.


• Works of art authentication (e.g. by comparing their composition with the means, materials and chemical elements available at the date of their manufacture).


• Direct dating using different techniques appropriate for each type of media to be analyzed (thermoluminescence, 14C, ESR, U / Th, dendrochronology).

CARAA works with a network of institutional laboratories and in agreement with various academic institutions in order to respond accurately to each issue.

All studies are subject to a detailed and reviewed report, including the operating conditions, the results and their interpretation.
